What is SEO and why is it so important?

Firstly, I would like to apologise. I jumped the gun with my last blog ‘Getting found on Google’, assuming everyone knows what SEO is and why it is so important.

Firstly, I would like to apologise. I jumped the gun with my last blog ‘Getting found on Google’, assuming everyone knows what SEO is and why it is so important. I went directly to a practical step on improving one’s SEO without first explaining its crucial role in the success of modern-day businesses.

So here I am, taking a step back and explaining why businesses today should be both worried about, and focused on, Search Engine Optimisation.

Let’s use a case study to clarify this idea. Say the goal for my website was to increase sales of beautiful, handcrafted rings. I want my site visitors to have searched “handmade rings” and not “Lord of the Rings”. Because people who enter “Lord of the Rings” into their browser usually aren’t in the market for buying beautiful, hand-made rings. Right? So, they won’t buy my rings and it is a waste of time for both of us.

What is SEO?

SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimisation. Most definitions use nerdy jargon and slang words, but I have tried to word it in a way that relates to all types of people. SEO is a free way of increasing the number of people who visit your site from internet searches by improving your web design, content, and coding. However, good SEO doesn’t just bring any old geezer to your site, it will attract people looking specifically for what your site offers.

In the current situation, there are very few businesses that can say the above statement and be correct. With this pandemic, we want to encourage as many businesses as we can to think about moving online. It is great to see so many businesses with online stores set up already. For those businesses that aren’t quite online yet, IT’S NOT TOO LATE.

My business doesn’t need SEO

In the current situation, there are very few businesses who can say the above statement and be correct. With this pandemic, we want to encourage as many businesses as we can to think about moving online. It is great to see so many businesses with online stores set up already. For those businesses that aren’t quite online yet, IT’S NOT TOO LATE.

We are at the three-week mark of the 4 weeks of lock down as I am writing this and even if isolation does only last 4 weeks, travel between regions will be restricted for a while longer. My point is, working on your online presence in the coming week or so will allow your customers to see the products and services that you are offering. Designing an Ecommerce site may seem daunting, but there are plenty of people willing to help, and plenty of great platforms that make it easier.

For those businesses that are already online. Good on you! You are already ahead of a lot of other NZ businesses. What’s your plan to stay ahead though? Capitalize on the fact you have a website and attract new customers by implementing a well thought out SEO plan.

How can I improve my SEO?

Now that you have a basic understanding of what search engine optimisation is, we can move forward and learn practical steps you can take to improve your search engine optimisation. My first recommendation would be to check out the blog I mentioned at the start (the one that should really come after this one anyway). Getting Found on Google. And keep your eyes on our social media to see new SEO techniques you will be able to implement right away.

If time is something you are lacking, then please feel free to reach out to us. We want to be here for local businesses during this time and are willing to offer discounts to anyone who needs our services in the coming weeks.
